Learning City Thrissur participated in the Playful Thrissur Local Area Planning hosted by Department of Architecture & Planning, College of Engineering, Thiruvananthapuram, part of their Urban Design Studio programme. A presentation was given by the Urban Design Studio team, followed by receiving inputs on Local Area Planning & Design from individuals and collectives committed to reimagining Thrissur city.
Following are a few recommendations and suggestions from LCT on the same.
Build activities and processes to maximise the joy and health of citizens
Health of people includes health of the environment. Ensure the health of air, water and soil, while creating background facilities such as walkways, cycle paths and open gyms.
Engage with soil and take care of its health. Meeting the basic needs of food, clothing and shelter depends on the health of the soil. Playful activities may include creating art with different varieties of mud, creating urban food gardens and food forests with public participation.
Facilitate processes oriented towards building resilience against economic and environmental uncertainties.
Ensure easy and fair access to space, services and mobility. Resist/stop privatisation and/or restriction of public spaces.
Advocate responsible waste management practices and ensure community participation. Include processes to facilitate reciprocity between humans and the rest of nature. Let bio residues return to the soil instead of polluting the city.
Focusing on building infrastructure is a limitation. Build perennial/long-term processes that aid learning, understanding, conviviality, civic sense, belongingness, togetherness and creativity.
Build processes to transition from the individual to the community, from competition to collaboration and cooperation, and from profit for a few to prosperity for all.
